You’ve found each other and now you’re planning to get married. Yay, I’m so happy for you! But you’re not exactly sure how you to best set up your multi-cultural wedding? No worries! As a wedding officiant I help you create a personalized non-religious wedding ceremony in German, English or both.
I am here to put your love for each other into words, tell your story and what makes your relationship so special. The great thing about a secular wedding ceremony is that you’re free to do whatever you want. We can tailor the ceremony to your wants and needs – there are no rules to what is right or wrong. It’s all about you!
We discuss which elements you envision for your ceremony and whom or what you would like to include, e.g. some words by your witnesses/ a family member, what kind of music or a special ritual. Together we develop a ceremony that is just right for the two of you. If there are some culturally specific features which you would like to include, we can totally do that. That is actually the beauty of this kind of ceremony. We can be as creative as we want!
Another great aspect of this type of ceremony is that you are not limited with regards to the venue of your wedding which would be the case with the registry office (Standesamt). So it’s totally up to you whether you see yourself getting married at the beach, in a museum or in your own backyard.
What’s important to me is that you feel entirely comfortable and have fun during the ceremony. I don’t like these to be boring. I want you and your guests to enjoy listening to me, laugh and sometimes even cry. This is your day and I want to make it even better!
I would love to hear all about your story and your favorite memories together and build that into my speech. I want to dive into what makes your relationship unique and make that visible to your guests. I strive to make your ceremony special and unforgettable!
Looking forward to getting to know you and finding out more about you and your love story!
There are several ways to set the ceremony up and we decide together what makes most sense. The most common ones are:
1. Both languages are used equally so everybody can follow what I say, e.g. alternating between German and English.
2. One main language and one used less frequently, e.g. most parts are done in one language and only certain parts are done in both languages.
3. Using only one language and an interpreter at the same time
No, for your marriage to be legally recognized in Germany you will have to go to the registry office (Standesamt). This is usually rather formal and bureaucratic. A secular wedding ceremony provides you with more time to talk about you and your love for each other.
After you got in touch with me we plan some time to meet and get to know each other better. I would love to hear about all of your plans for your big day and you can find out whether I would be the right person to officiate your wedding. This usually takes and hour or two. Now you can take some time to think about booking me for the ceremony. If that is the case: Yay, please move on to the next step!
In this interview we take a lot of time to talk about various things. First and foremost I will dive into your love story and all of the details that make your relationship unique. In addition to that we also discuss how you envision your ceremony: use of languages, rituals, inclusion of other people etc. In the end it’s your wedding and decision so you need to be happy with all aspects of it. This interview is pretty intense and often takes about 3-4 hours.
With all of the information I gathered during the interview, I now begin to write your individualized wedding speech that corresponds to all of your wishes. In case you are planning to include another speaker in your ceremony, e.g. a witness or family member, I will reach out to them at this stage.
On your big day I am there to make sure you’re calm and ready! I am there well in advance to agree on the last few details with other service providers (e.g. photographer) and to do a technical check before we get started. I know that this is a very exciting day and you will be nervous but you can trust that I will make sure that your ceremony is well orchestrated so you can enjoy every second of it.
